Unit 316 - Musical Variety Performance

Character summaries:

MISS HONEY

Miss Jennifer Honey is Kind-hearted, sweet, beautiful, resourceful, encouraging, motherly, selfless, affectionate, loving. She is the daughter of Magnus Honey and the niece of Agatha Trunchbull who at the end of the music becomes the adoptive mother of Matilda. She cares more about her relationships than living in a comfortable house with her cruel aunt. She teaches at Crunchem Hall Elementary School under the supervision of her aunt, the Principal. Her father Magnus was killed by Agatha Trunchbull but it was ruled as suicide by police, due to there being no other explanation. She lives in a shed and she is the first person to fully appreciate Matilda's incredible abilities and tries to bring them to the attention of the school's formidable headteacher and Matilda's uninterested parents. I think Miss honey is in her 20’s as she doesn’t have much power in the school. Her goal in her life is to educate the young and try and stop the suffering. Miss honey is friends with Matilda who is 6 and has most of her interactions with Matilda.

MISS ADELAIDE

Adelaide is a strongly comic and classic showgirl. A club singer and Nathan’s long-suffering fiancĂ©e, Adelaide is not always the brightest. I think she is in her mid 30’s due to her being engaged to Nathan for 14 years. She loves Nathan and her goal is to actually marry Nathan. Adelaide lives in new york and is originally from new york.

Adelaide was an idea but in rehearsals, Adelaide's part was not needed and developed into one of the crapshooters, named Rusty Charlie. Rusty Charlie sings a part in Fugue for tin horns and this is the reason for him being a named character.

SARAH BROWN

She is one of the Members of the mission who is an idealistic but sheltered missionary. Sarah is kind-hearted but too categorical in her view of the world. She learns she has an adventurous side and goes through character changes over the course of the show.

PERFORMANCE PLAN - Character

Weekly Evaluations

2/3/18

In this rehearsal, we started to develop the movement in the song and thought about the scenes we would do before and after the song. I think we created movement quickly and decided on the set we will use. It was difficult to decide on the scenes as not many of us knew where the song was in the musical or how to end the piece. Personally, I struggled with the pitch the song is sung at as I am an alto so don't generally sing high. To work on this we could add in a harmony line to give the song some depth. Looking forward we need to finish the choreography and finalise the script to be able to block it. Once we got the song and roles we got straight on to the choreography and got on well as a group to get on with the piece. I contributed an idea of the scene after but we are unsure of what to do so will have to wait and figure it out.

5/3/18-13//418

We refined the movement in these weeks and created some of the dances like naughty, revolting children and both crapshooters and sit down your rocking the boat.

23/4/18-27/4/18
We did a full run through of the show so far, we found that we had not done many of the link scenes so were improving them. I need to work on my character (Sarah Brown and Miss honey) as I do not have the authority the characters need. I need to work on my accent and my vocal to show the contrasting characters. I need to be more concerned in my link scene and more teacher like in my Miss honey scene.

Notes that affect me from the run
  • During the scene before revolting children. Everyone needs to be louder, rowdier and more energised
  • The line “putting up a fight” should be choral
  • People should have umbrellas and walk past Charlotte during her speech to display how the speech is on the street
  • People need to load while walking past Charlotte so she has to speak up to be heard
  • End luck be a lady with people in position for crapshooters
  • People should be shouting and acting at the sides of crapshooters ballet to give it more energy
  • Calamity Jane scene was “terrible”. The crowd needs to be choreographed and everyone needs to be drinking something.
  • All people need to make more out of falling out of the carriages in the song
  • “Happy times are coming” is only charlottes carriage
  • Naughty is too crowded at back, move some people closer to the audience
  • Transition after naughty needs work (re-blocked) also it needs to be closer to the audience
  • Sarah brown scene needs to be more concerned in the treatment of Calamity
  • Sit down you’re rocking the boat needs work
  • Scene transitions need to faster
The show was 1 hour 5 minutes long without an interval.
We also did set transitions which we need to block who is doing what and where everything is going. We need to then put up the list of who puts things on and who takes them off in the wing. I created the set plot in this week so this helped us to know what we can leave on and what we have to take off.
Some of the songs didn’t go too well but we just need to go over the choreography to refresh our minds of the spacing and things like that.

Showday-14/5/18

During this day we did the technical run, dress run and two shows.

Production meeting Evaluation

This meeting was successful, I feel that we covered everything we needed to cover and I inputted into the meeting well. I made a few suggestions on how we could use the set and for the most part, I think we kept to topic pretty much and made good decisions in regard to what we will do in the run-up to the show. I think I will create a set plot so we know what set is needed for each scene and song.
Evaluations of musicals
20-minute musical
In this, I played Adelaide and Rusty Charlie and sang as both. I sang Fugue for tin horns as Rusty Charlie and Marry the Man today as Adelaide with Sarah. Marry the man today was not recorded due to not having enough space on the memory card so we don't have from sky asking Sarah to go to Havana. We chose the songs by giving everyone a chance to sing, I suggested the songs because of the pitching of them and also that they start and finish the musical. Also, many of the numbers are ensemble numbers and require more people in the songs to get them to the best they could be and not look like the stage was empty. We chose these songs as it gave all of us the chance to do some singing in the mini-musical thus giving us all equal amounts to do. I think that Fugue for Tinhorns went well besides the fact that I forgot some of the lyrics. Marry the man today went well and this was because of our characterisation and the reactions from the audience. They laughed a lot throughout because of our over the top characterisation and the lines in our mini-musical. We had few rehearsals and in this, we decided on harmonies by just singing the songs. For Marry the man today we decided I would take the higher part at the end of the song as I knew it better than Charlotte.  Because of the duet with me and Charlotte, I chose to take the smaller part in Fugue for Tinhorns and to harmonise the ending by going lower.

In terms of acting, I feel that my accent could have been improved and I will work on this if I am selected for one of the roles in guys and dolls. Also, my physicality could have been improved as I didn't show the difference in my characters enough.

We got good reactions from the audience and a lot of laughter during the scenes and songs.

I think we could improve the blocking of Fugue for Tinhorns for the actual thing and make the scenes better. I think the strengths of our performance were the singing of Fugue for Tinhorns but I think Marry the man today could be improved if it is put into the variety show.
Musical variety
In the rehearsal process, I feel that we worked too much on revolting children and hard knock life and left a lot of stuff to the last week or to for the first time run them in a full run of the show. This made us have little time to work on our characters as we were not getting time to run the scene with the correct people when we were not thinking about when we were next on or on when we have quick changes. However, I think our group rehearsals for the initial songs went well and gave us time to develop our characters for these specific scenes and songs.

I think my contribution and teamwork on the production was good, I feel that I was a team player and was able to overcome issues both personal and as a group. I created a set plot for this specific show which helped with the set transitions from song/scene to scene/song. I also wrote one of the scenes for the production which meant we had a production that flowed.

I don't really think I lead the group at any point but I definitely helped in the creating process. I think I wrote the scene I wrote well as it was one where my character wasn't in her natural environment and was in Deadwood city.

I think I portrayed my characters well but I could have improved them by looking more into their physicality and vocal than I did to become the character. I found it hard in the production to do Revolting children in the shoes I was wearing because I didn't have time to change them in my quick change. I also think my vocals in this song were not great because of the pitch of the song as I normally sing alto. I found most of the songs a little high for me but I persisted and did the best I could in that situation. My speaking vocal could have been improved for Sarah purely because of my accent as I think I went a little British at times in the scene. In terms of my vocal in Fugue for Tinhorns, I found that it sat well in my vocal range and it went well on the night. I did get some feedback on this song because all you could hear was Jaime in our first show because of his microphone but this was fixed for the second show. I think at times the spacing wasn't great but this was because of adrenaline and how much we were enjoying performing this show. When thinking about movement, I think the dances went well and the choreographed dance numbers for our dance unit went well and had the correct stylisation in them. In terms of dialogue(diction and projection), I think I had the correct amount of diction and volume for the roles as they both had an authority and Sarah Brown has a mind that isn't clouded by fear.

In terms of feedback people said that it was hard to keep up with but was good. Also that people couldn't understand what was being said. These were valid points as it was hard to keep up with from an actors point of view as well.
