Looking back I realise that I was not that aware of my vocal habits when we started the unit. I was aware of my voice being quite quiet but I wasn’t aware of the lack of diction and clarity in my voice, also I realise that I take very few pauses. I feel that my voice has more clarity and I have better diction but I still feel that I could improve on my diction. The main difficulties I faced when working towards my vocal approach was the differentiation between my characters in hope springs. The play told a story as well as our vocals as it showed the tone of specific moments when it was unclear in movement.
In regards to Hope Springs, I feel that this was a good ensemble piece to get aquatinted with the other people on the course. I liked the Ensemble movement and choral speaking as this was very effective in portraying the atmosphere and experiences that the pupils experiences. I enjoyed the movement sequence (Parent scene) although I found it hard at first because of the timings although it looked better when we weren’t completely in time with everyone else. At first, i found the Island voice sections frustrating because most of them were on a completely different topic to the lines prior to it. However, this became easier as time went on as I became more familiar with the lines. My vocal goals were to increase my volume and to improve on my diction. I believe I did that and I then in one of my notes was told to give more passion in my monologue and that became one of my goals. I believe that I met my goals as I was told that my voice was heard and my lines were heard. I think this piece revealed that I learn my lines gradually and that I struggle when I have to start a section that is on a different topic. Also that I struggle when having to be angry as I feel that I am the opposite to that. This tells me that I have a comfort zone in terms of characters as I choose to not go for leadership roles as my height may put me in a good position but I don’t think I do well in those types of roles.
I believe that I approached this work differently to the other people as I have a lot of theatre experience and know the theatre etiquette and the importance of being on stage at the right time. However, i think we all had a similar approach to finding how we play each of our roles. If I were commenting on my performance as a teacher I would say that I portrayed the pupils well and that I had good pacing and timing. I think that the most engaging moment in the vocal performance was the last few scenes as they had a lot of choral speaking and symbolic movement that helped to bring the story to a close. In my opinion, this piece of work meets the standards for the assignment in which we had to focus on voice. This is because there were many atmospheres that we had to show with our voice that couldn’t be done with movement. Also that there was quite a bit of choral speaking so it showed our unity in sections. I don’t think it completely met the standards as it was weaker at points in terms of vocal ability and it additionally went better on one night compared to the other.
Looking forward one thing I would like to improve upon vocally is my characterisation and my emphasis as those are weaker in terms of my voice. One thing I saw from one of my classmates vocal work that I would like to try in the next piece is the control that Laura had over her voice and how she went from a loud to a soft voice swiftly and effortlessly. Looking at the piece some things I would like to try and improve upon was the unison Island voice lines as we could have really done something with them and include more group movement with speaking as during the parent scene this was really effective and it would have created more symbolic moments in the play. In future projects, i would like to spend more time on group movement and speech as this was effective in Hope Springs and would benefit the projects in my view. I think I would like more help in the future with group movement as some people knew it better and if we didn’t know it as well it was noticeable. I think this would help with our unity and unison and benefit our productions in the future.
